Just after 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, a Daibeliz Taveras, age 33, from Brooklyn, New York, traveling northbound on I-95 a half-mile south of the Exit 17 off-ramp in Norwalk lost control of her 2018 Dodge Journey and struck another vehicle, before drifting and colliding with the cruiser, state police said.
The state police trooper, the driver of the Journey, and six passengers in the Journey were hospitalized with what police say were minor injuries.
Taveras was charged with:
- Failure to operate in a proper lane in violation,
- Traveling too fast for conditions,
- Following too close resulting in an accident,
- No insurance out of state
The Middlesex County crash happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday in Cromwell.
A 2013 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling southbound on Route 9 South, 500 feet north of Exit 18 in Cromwell when the driver lost control and struck the metal beam guardrail, then struck a fire department vehicle, then struck the patrol cruiser, then a Dodge Dart which were all stopped in the left lane and median after an earlier crash, state police said.
Two drivers involved, including the state trooper, were hospitalized with minor injuries.
The driver of the car that lost control, 24-year-old Shekeem Shipley, of Middletown, was issued an infraction for driving too fast for conditions and failure to maintain lane, police said.
